I'm late to the game on this, sorry.

A minor nit... The property "work_dir" that configures the location of the "webapps" directory might better have been named "webapps_dir" as there actually is a "work" directory for Tomcat. As an aside, in our custom Tomcat appliance, we allow configuration of this work directory location just as the webapp directory can be configured. It can grow in size depending on the webapp you are deploying.

Also, how come you guys created a tomcat 5.5 appliance instead of a tomcat 6 (and JDK 1.6)? 5.5 is sooo old skewl. :)

Huge kudos on the tomcat specific counters for this appliance. That is very nice over a stock tomcat appliance.
