Hi folks,
We at 3Tera are pleased to announce the release of AppLogic 2.4.5 beta (http://doc.3tera.com/AppLogic24/ReleaseNotes-2-4-5.html).
The star of the show, of course, is the added support for Microsoft(r) Windows(tm), bringing AppLogic to all major server OS environments: Linux, Windows and Solaris/OpenSolaris.
To sign up for AppLogic or to receive more information, register here (http://www.3tera.com/Get-A-Grid/). Read the official press release here (http://www.3tera.com/News/Press-Releases/Recent/3Tera-Brings-Windows-to-Cloud-Computing.php).
The technical scoop:
Support for Windows
AppLogic 2.4.5 now supports Windows appliances. Currently, all editions of Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, 32-bit, are supported: Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter and Web server. Support for 64-bit Windows and 2008 server will be added in an upcoming release.
User Interface Improvements
There are a few new and easy to use wizards in the Applications dashboard:
provision a new application from template
migrate application from another grid
migrate application to another grid
In addition, the menu system within the dashboard and the editor has been completely restructured (yes, we know we'll get a lot of "where did X go?" questions). Note that many rarely used operations have been moved out of the context menu and into the menu bar. The editor menu system now complies with desktop application user interface design guidelines. It will take some getting used to -- please send us feedback on the new organization.
In addition, all long operations -- like starting an app or branching a class -- now have progress indicator and a cancel button (whew! ;) )
Simplified Creation of Appliances
AppLogic now has a utility for creating appliance from CD/DVD ISO images. The support includes the notion of global volumes, symbolic links to volumes, the iso2class utility, the appliance kit, as well as boot console support. The AppLogic user interface can now display the boot console of an appliance -- whether it is a text console or a graphics console.
The boot console support is also useful when troubleshooting boot problems with appliances -- in combination of the boot console with the "vol manage" command makes a quick task of fixing boot-time problems.
New Appliances
Of course, the Windows support comes with a few new appliances: a Windows virtual dedicated server (VDS) and a Windows catalog appliance.
In addition, AppLogic 2.4.5 includes the following two appliances:
HALB, a new session-aware HTTP load balancer that will supersede HLB. HALB is about twice as fast as HLB and appears to be much more reliable. It also adds programmatic control, notifications, as well as many health-check options for the backend servers
INSSLR, a redundant network gateway with SSL support. The second appliance in the 3Tera disaster recovery appliance suite, INSSLR complements the replicated MySQL database appliance and allows running primary and backup applications side-by-side, with smooth failover and failback between them.
Improvements in migration, import and export capabilities
As more and more customers operate multiple AppLogic grids in different geographic locations, we have extended the support for exchanging data and apps between grids.
The notable capabilities include:
app migration can now be initiated either from the source or from the target grid
migration is now available not only for applications, but also for catalogs, classes and even individual volumes
direct import from http server allows importing apps, catalogs and classes from external storage
A lot more details are available in the release notes (http://doc.3tera.com/AppLogic24/ReleaseNotes-2-4-5.html).
What's new for AppLogic 2.1.1 users
For those who have not used AppLogic 2.3, AppLogic 2.4.5 also brings the following functions initially provided in AppLogic 2.3 (http://forum.3tera.com/showthread.php?t=289):
support for 64-bit appliances
support for OpenSolaris and Solaris 10, as well as for Sun's Zetabyte file system (ZFS)
support for dynamic appliances, including the backup appliance, migration appliance and SLA controller appliance
new appliances include a PostgreSQL server, a 64-bit MySQL server, a replicated MySQL server, a load generator appliance, as well as several new virtual dedicated server appliances
introduction of the appliance kit (APK) for easier creation of new appliances
visual improvements in the editor include text annotations, OS icons, quick documentation links and design error flagging
automatic check for high availability capacity
support for locked appliances and applications
support for ext3 file system with snapshots
user-level access to application and appliance descriptors (ADL)
Availability
AppLogic 2.4.5 beta is available immediately to select partners and enterprise customers. We're working with our service provider partners to make the release available to service customers, including Virtual Private Datacenter (VPDC), Virtual Private Server/Virtual Dedicated Server (VPS/VDS) and other offerings. Contact your favorite sales rep with questions on pricing and deployment; or the community support forums about features and capabilities.
Thanks to all of our users for the unwavering support and the great suggestions! We hope you will enjoy using the new version as much as we enjoyed building it.
