View Full Version : Super Slow Windows Filer Operations

Applogic 2.9.9

Any Windows volume operations take 15 to 20 minutes for the filer application to start and perform a task. The operation doesn't error out but remains in "Preparing to create filesystem" for an average of 15 minutes. Is there any way to improve the performance?

Same for WIN03 and WIN08

Windows is usually a bear. Depending on how big the volumes are it can take a bit to get them up and running.

What is your setup?

We run AMD 8-core setups with 3 drives per box. Ours takes about ..... 3-5 minutes to start up and start the process.

Thanks,

Hello,

There are a couple of things that could be a major factor here:

#1 as mike mentioned.. the size of the filer boot volume can do a lot.. the difference of copying a 3GB volume v a 8GB volume on a filer operation can be great.

#2 is that if for some reason you do not have the PV drivers installed at all or incorrectly in the filer. This can cause a great degradation in the IO performance and slow the volume operations down significantly.

I would look at those two items first. IF this does not help we will try to come up with some different ideas.

If you can not solve this at all PM me and we can take a look together.

Jessie

Hi there,

i have exactly the same Problem: The windows filer operation are incredibly slow! The filer appliance stays in "building" state for 15 Minutes. And the creating of the file system takes a really long time.

How can i check the PV drivers?

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

I would recommend contacting support. If I understand correctly where the filer appliance is staying for long time - in "building" state, then this is when the appliance is being provisioned (i.e., before it is started); the PV drivers would have no impact on the building state.

Starting a Windows filer does take a while - but I don't think it would stay in building state for more than 6-7 minutes at the most.

How are other volume operations (e.g., provisioning a Linux VDS)?

Best regards,
- Peter

PS I think getting support to look at the system might be best.
