Any news about the launch of the Appstore beta ? I read on the website that the beta is supposed to go live in Q3 2009.
Thanks a lot

Thanks a lot, it looks great.
It seems VMWare has pulled out something similar with its Virtual Appliance Marketplace. I can see the appstore will be slightly different from VMWare's approach (for example business model). How do you see 3tera's strong points in this arena ?
Cheers

duckysan,
There are quite a few differences. Here are just a few we can discuss pre-launch:
- AppStore will offer ready made IT objects -- appliances -- that you can assemble into larger applications. For example, a commercial load balancer can be used as a drop-in replacement of the open source HALB. In most cases, drag-and-drop and visual connect is all it takes to configure the appliance to make it work versus standard virtual or physical server installation and configuration.
- AppStore will provide not only appliances, but also complete multi-server stacks and applications. You can subscribe to those and deploy without a fuss because AppStore will automatically create a pick list of all appliances needed and. Even operational policies like auto-scaling, DR, and backup can be packaged as part of applications in the AppStore in order to provide true ready-to-use infrastructure.
- Appliances and applications in AppStore will be both commercial (paid) and free. For commercial appliances, AppStore arranges for metering and payment on a pay-per-use basis (usually instance-hours), regardless of where you run the appliance -- in your own datacenter or in a service provider's cloud.
- Commercial appliances in AppStore can be locked by their publishers so users can deploy, configure and manage them freely but cannot open them up, reverse engineer and/or copy the code out.
- Appliances and applications in the AppStore are from trusted vendors, not from ahacker47.
- AppStore also provides metrics beyond just download and ratings -- it can give you real usage data.
Those are just to get started...
